Detaching from Fitness Technology

This week I’m off to Wales for a much needed few days to relax with my favourite human and have been thinking about detaching from all fitness technology for the week as a little experiment. Pembrokeshire in Wales is one my absolute favourite places to go to, as my family have been going there since my Dad was a boy, so it holds a very special place in my heart. Rob and I love it because we stay right near the coast, so it’s the perfect place for lots of hiking and trail running. Check out my DIY active holiday blog post I did to see what I mean.

Even though I very much intend on walking, running, doing yoga, getting aboard a SUP and paddling out to sea, I have decided to not track any of my workouts while I’m there. I’m going to leave my apple watch at home and just wear my normal watch. This isn’t because the apple watch has done anything to upset me, it’s just because sometimes I think it’s healthy to detach ourselves from all this fitness technology and just really be at one with how our body is feeling rather than looking at numbers on a screen to tell you if you’ve done enough that day.

fitness technology

Can’t wait to be back here, but this time wearing shorts!

I like to think I have quite a healthy relationship with fitness technology, I don’t let fitness trackers rule my life, but I’ll hold my hands up and say that there have been the odd few days in the past when I’ve looked at those activity rings, so close to being complete, so I’ve got up to move my body just so I have the satisfaction of them joining. I know that whether they admit it or not, there are a lot of people who do similar things, not just on occasion, but most days.

Even though I love my apple watch and you may love your fitness tracker, I just want to remind us all that it’s about how you FEEL and not about what the heart rate monitor or number on a screen is saying. As useful as this information is a lot of the time, it isn’t the most important thing. What’s important is that we remember to do what feels right for our mind and body each day. Yes, push your limits, yes challenge yourself, but maybe just for this week, join me in having a fitness technology free week and see how it makes you feel. Maybe we’ll hate it, maybe we’ll love it, but it’ll be interesting to find out.

I’d love to know if you’re going to join me and how you get on.

Love, Cat x
