Power yoga is just another baby under the Hatha yoga mothership, building upon more basic vinyasa flow sequences and making them slightly tougher (as you’ll see in my power yoga video below). Regular readers of Imperfect Matter will know that I love many different yoga styles and a lot of the time I get onto my mat not knowing what kind of movements will come. I love just moving from my heart and doing what feels right for my body in that exact moment. Sometimes that will leave me breathing deeply into postures for minutes at a time, but I also love the feeling of an energising power yoga sequence.
People often think that power yoga means advanced postures and a fast-paced flow, but that doesn’t need to be the case. Quite often the most challenging power yoga classes I do are those where I have to hold postures for that bit longer and work through lots of balancing postures.
Just like vinyasa flow yoga, power yoga classes leave me feeling so energised and supple… if not a little shattered from all of the hard work! There’s nothing wrong with challenging your body, as long as you make sure your alignment is correct and you’re breathing into every movement.
In case you aren’t familiar with my YouTube channel, I’m puttingĀ more time into it at the moment, so trying to bring you new videos every 1-2 weeks. My most recent video is this 17-minute power yoga video sequence that you can do in the comfort of your own home. The important thing to remember is that if it gets too much for you at any time then come down to your mat and take child’s pose.
