It’s getting colder here in the UK. Today it felt like real, actual Winter. You know the one where you can’t feel the tip of your nose, your fingers or your toes? Yep, it’s here. Winter is well and truly here to stay for a while. I’m quite a motivated person, but even the dark mornings and evenings get me down and zap the life out of my fitness motivation sometimes.

Here are a few winter fitness motivation tips to help you keep on top of your fitness throughout the colder months, to keep you feeling well and balanced.

PICK YOUR TIME

With the mornings getting light later and the evenings getting dark before you’ve even finished work for the day, for me, it’s crucial I find a time to workout when it’s still light out. Even if I’m heading to a basement gym, there’s just something that the darkness does to nudge my motivation levels down a notch. Try finding a workout that you can do on your lunch break or see if your work will allow you to work flexi-time. So many companies are allowing flexible working these days, so use it to your advantage and fit in a workout.

BEFORE YOU GET TOO COSY

Following on nicely from my point above, I find it easier to train or go to a yoga class if I go straight from work or meetings. The moment I set foot in my house, the heating is on, the fridge is calling, I can see the sofa – it’s game over. I know I won’t be going out again! With this plan of action just be sure to think about what you’re eating too. If you’re going to train or do some kind of fitness after work, just make sure you’re well fuelled, maybe having a light snack towards the end of your working day.

TRY SOMETHING NEW

Winter is the time we start to notice everything… like how boring we’re finding the same old fitness routine we’ve been following for the past few months. Now would be the time to find motivation in trying something new. Maybe it’s a new guide or plan to follow (a great way to stay on track) or maybe it’s something different entirely like swapping the gym for the swimming pool, or taking out one yoga session per week and trying a dance class instead.

HOME SWEET HOME

Never to be forgotten is the power of a home workout. There are so many workouts and yoga classes on YouTube *cough Cat Meffan YouTube cough*! But seriously, if you don’t fancy heading to the gym in the darkness and cold, then you really don’t have to. Try doing a sweaty HIIT workout in your lounge or one of my yoga flows. That way you save the time travelling to the gym, which means more time relaxing on the sofa… resting post workout is a must!

FOR THE BRAVE

Those of you who are brave and will continue to run outside through the winter months I think you deserve a new base layer or reflective pair of leggings to celebrate your awesomeness! I know we haven’t all got the money to go and buy new things, but with brands like Next, H&M, ASOS and Reebok selling such reasonably priced activewear, there’s something to suit everyone’s budget.
